FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Why do I hear boss music?Okay, but for reals: the initial impression is cold and emotionless, and he can be blunt with his words to the point of bruising. However, he's actually a really decent guy who's just... incredibly socially awkward and has difficulty showing emotion (but he does have them, oh boy does he have them). Additionally, there's always an air of otherworldliness about him, likely due to being a vessel for Sothis, Fodlan's progenitor god.
SHARD
Located over his unbeating heart (which is actually a Crest Stone), his shard is smoothed to a fine polish and oval-shaped, its surface speckled with streaks of colours that remind one of the sky at early dawn. If one squints, a faint pattern can be seen in very, very faded pale grey.

Advocate (❈) tattoo. It's on his upper back, sitting directly where his heart is. Basically in line with his shard.
PERSONALITY
Byleth is an individual who is well aware that he is abnormal by most people's standards. Surrounded by mercenaries since he was very young and raised by the famed Bladebreaker himself, Byleth grew up on the battlefield where being cool, calm and collected was necessary for his survival. Combined with his unflinching poker face and stunted social skills, he tends to come across as cold to those he meets. On the contrary, Byleth is actually quite an empathetic individual, and when given the chance to bond with those of similar age to him, approaches the task in full earnest. However, for the longest time his closest companion has been his father, who has always been able to intuit his feelings without him needing to openly emote or express himself. Therefore, Byleth is a little awkward when it comes to interacting with others, and can unintentionally come across as uncomfortably stilted at times. As well, Byleth becomes subtly frustrated or upset if he is accused of being heartless, meaning that though he tends to take the more pragmatic - and therefore ruthless - route to deal with any situation he ends up in, he is still hurt at being considered emotionless when he is anything but. In fact, Byleth himself states that he "detests senseless killing", up to and including insects, where he'd prefer to set them free rather than killing them. Additionally, his interactions with Jeralt and Alois show glimpses of a dry sense of humour, meaning that his 'emotionless' persona drops slightly when it comes to those he is close with and cares about. He's also quite earnest when it comes to trying to convey his emotions to someone he's close to, and as a result, can be quite blunt with his words - making up for the clumsiness with sheer sincerity.
BACKGROUND
Wiki time - but a quick tl;dr Byleth is the son of Sitri, a homunculus Nabatean, and Jeralt, a human enhanced with the blood of a Nabatean, and has the Crest Stone of the progenitor god, Sothis, implanted in his heart - this was done to save him, as he was stillborn, and Sitri begged Rhea, her creator/mother, to transfer her Crest Stone to her child to revive him. This succeeded, and it resulted in Byleth becoming the very first successful vessel for Sothis, though he only awakens her consciousness when he is well into adulthood. Anyway, after that whole Crest Stone transplant stuff happened, Jeralt grew suspicious of what Rhea was doing to his kid and ended up faking his and Byleth's death by setting part of Garreg Mach on fire and absconding into the night. He raised Byleth as a mercenary, and always ensured to avoid the Church of Seiros (the institution that Rhea leads) to keep Byleth a secret from Rhea. At some point during Byleth's career as a mercenary, he narrowly avoids death by Sothis awakening inside of him, and granting him the power to manipulate time (the Divine Pulse). Combined with his powerful Crest (the Crest of Flames or Crest of the Goddess), and his finely honed skills with the blade and magic, Byleth is a sheer force of nature on the battlefield.
He's also really fucking weird.
